Bulgaria's Bansko has shown its determination to take east European skiing to a whole new level, with skiing and accommodation to compete with the Alps on quality rather than cost.
UK's The Observer read on Sunday that at the Olympia Ski Show in London a few weeks ago champion racer Marc Girardelli was promoting not some big American or French resort, but that Bulgarian resort.
GBP 20 M has already been spent on new lifts, and a cluster of new hotels has been built close to the slopes, the newspaper informed.
The heart of the town is a UNESCO heritage site with pretty cobbled streets and welcoming bars and restaurants, the British edition told its readers.
With wintertime approaching, Bulgaria's other leading resorts, Borovets and Pamporovo, are trying to keep up. At the moment though, Pamporovo is best only for total beginners, while Borovets has more to offer intermediates, The Observer wrote.
Leading British professional golf player Ian Woosnam came to Bulgaria to advertise two new golf course complexes for the total price of EUR 118 M that will be built in the country.
During a press conference on Tuesday builders Balkanstroy and Barazh & Co announced that apart from golf courses the complexes will include housing, restaurants, cafes and other infrastructure.
Woosnam, who has twice won the first place in the European Order of Merit, has designed the complexes together with European Golf Design"
The two golf complexes will be in Blachik - at Bulgaria's Northern seaside and between the towns of Razlog and Bansko in the Southwest part of the country.

Ski Legend Girardelli to Open Sports Centre in Bansko

Ski legend Marc Girardelli and the municipality of Bulgaria's mountain resort Bansko will establish a joint venture for the creation of a major sports club in the town.
Nearly EUR 8 M will be invested in "Girardelli Sport Centre". The new sports centre will be constructed on an area of 9 decares.
Bansko deputy mayor Ivaylo Rahov explained that the idea behind the sports centre is to establish an elite school for talented children skiers. In the new sports academy world sports stars will be invited to teach the new talents.
